What Roles do Dental Hygienists Play?

There are so many different dental professions that exist today. However, they all work to provide similar things — proper care of the teeth, gums and mouth as a whole. A dental hygienist is one of those dental professionals that does aim to keep the teeth clean and healthy.

One may be curious as to what a dental hygienist does and what roles they play when it comes to dentistry. Today, we will go over a dental hygienist's roles in dentistry and how they help people and their teeth.

What roles do dental hygienists play?

Educate a patient

Dental hygienists help educate patients that come into the office. They help them to understand what happens during certain procedures as well as give advice on any fears or anxieties that one may be facing before a procedure. Educating a patient on what happens during visits to the dentist can help ease anyone’s fears. It's important for the patient to be fully aware of any treatment plans or procedures in order for them to be comfortable.

X-rays

Dental hygienists are often given the responsibility of administering x-rays for a patient. This simple task is extremely important in order for the dentist or oral surgeon to see what the patient’s teeth and mouth look like from different angles. X-rays are given periodically in order to ensure that the teeth are in the best shape possible.

Preliminary examinations on new patients

Often, when people visit a new dental office and become a new patient, they require a preliminary examination. These preliminary examinations help a dentist or dental professional to know what condition the incoming patient’s teeth are in. A dental hygienist is qualified to examine and inspect the teeth for general warning signs of any issues.

Chart

Charts are an important part of every medical profession. They ensure that proper notes and records are kept on every patient that they have. A dental hygienist typically will record information on the chart while the dentist is discussing treatment or procedure plans with a patient. The hygienist is able to ensure that the dentist or dental professional will later be able to find that information.

Dental hygienists play an important role in that of dentistry. They are necessary in dental offices in order for the office to work properly as a team. While they don’t have as much responsibility as a dentist, they do have an important job to ensure that a patient is educated and taken care of.
