What Dental Specialist Performs Bone Grafting?

bone grafting Sterling, VA

Dental bone grafting can be used to restore bone tissues in the jaw. Bone tissue loss can occur when a missing tooth is not replaced with an implant. The part of the jaw that held the tooth can begin to wither away without a root.

When a tooth is intact, the force created when biting down on something gets transferred to the jaw via the tooth's root. This stimulation keeps the bone tissue in the area healthy. Lose a tooth and the bone tissue that once held it in place can break down unless it is replaced with an implant.

Bone tissue loss may lead to the formation of wrinkles and other changes to a person's appearance. It can also make it difficult to get a dental implant.

How dental bone grafting is used in dentistry

Many people find out they need bone grafts when they go in for an implant consultation. The dentist may conclude after an examination that the patient does not have sufficient bone tissues to hold an implant in place. Such patients are advised to get bone grafts to become eligible for implants.

Who performs dental bone grafts?

Bone grafts can be done by most oral surgeons and some periodontists. The procedure involves oral surgery. These are the different types of bone grafts:

1. Autograft

In this procedure, bone is taken from one part of the patient's body and transferred to another. Therefore there is no potential for disease transmission or a negative reaction from the patient's immune system. This technique can be used for small and large grafts and has a high rate of success.

The main drawback is that the patient has to deal with additional surgery to extract the grafting material. This exposes them to the possibility of infection and pain as well as a longer recovery.

2. Xenograft

During this procedure, bone tissues are taken from an animal and transplanted into the patient. This method offers several benefits:

  • It is one of the most commonly used methods.
  • The grafting materials are easy to get.
  • It has a good track record of success.
  • Portions of the graft can eventually turn into parts of the patient's bone tissue.

There are a few drawbacks, however. There is a small risk of diseases being transmitted. Also, as is the case with all the techniques but autografts, the grafted tissue does not stimulate the patient's cells to form new bone tissue, but the grafting materials may remain in the patient's body for years.

3. Alloplast

Alloplast grafts use synthetic materials for the grafting. This procedure may be recommended in particular when only small grafts are needed. As the material is synthetic, it poses no risk of disease transmission.

4. Allograft

This involves using bone tissue extracted from a deceased person. It is suitable for small grafts and generally has a lower risk of disease transmission than xenografts.
