How an Emergency Dentist Can Treat Exposed Nerves

Exposed nerves in the mouth can be a serious issue that requires prompt care from an emergency dentist to ensure the symptoms do not worsen or linger for longer than necessary. Oftentimes the symptoms of exposed nerves become severe with little warning, and it is helpful to know what to do if the issue becomes an emergency.

An overview of exposed nerves treatment

An exposed nerve, or exposed tooth root, occurs when the nerves of a tooth become vulnerable. While every instance of exposed nerves requires treatment, issues that worsen suddenly and become intolerable often prompt an emergency dentist visit. The following is everything to know about exposed nerves, symptoms and treatment options.

Exposed nerves causes and symptoms

Exposed nerves can be the result of a number of issues. Most commonly, the condition is the result of tooth decay. Tooth decay often results from poor oral hygiene, a diet that is high in sugar and other carbohydrates, or a combination of both. Exposed nerves may occur as a result of gum disease as well. If gum disease leads to gum recession, the nerves may become exposed. Of course, there are other causes of gum recession, such as brushing too hard over an extended period of time.

The main symptom of exposed nerves is increased tooth sensitivity. Exposed nerves often make teeth vulnerable to sensitivity particularly when they are exposed to hot or cold substances. There may also be chronic pain such as a persistent toothache.

Emergency dentist treatment options

Every patient is unique, and the treatment options depend on the particular cause and symptoms of the exposed nerves. However, there are two main treatment options that emergency dentists use to treat exposed nerves, a dental filling and a root canal. For less severe cases, the emergency dentist will likely recommend a dental filling as it is faster, less invasive and often more cost-effective than a root canal.

However, more severe cases may require a root canal treatment. The emergency dentist will also work to educate the patient on ways to prevent exposed nerves and other oral health concerns from developing in the future.

When to visit an emergency dentist

Symptoms vary from mild to severe. Mild symptoms can be treated through over-the-counter remedies until the patient can visit the dentist at a convenient time. However, moderate to severe symptoms of exposed nerves typically require more immediate treatment. In some instances, the symptoms can become severe with little warning. The sensitivity may increase to a point where it is felt when taking a deep breath or the toothache may become intolerable. If this occurs, then it is important to visit an emergency dentist right away.
