6 Habits that Sabotage Good Dental Care

Practicing good dental hygiene is incredibly important. From flossing and brushing to having regular dental checkups, keeping your teeth in top shape has benefits for the entire body. Not only can having a ravishing smile improve your self-confidence, but it can drastically improve how others see you. However, there are plenty of habits that can harm your teeth. Even only one of these habits can cause permanent damage to your precious teeth.

Bad habits that will harm your teeth

1. Brushing too hard

Although brushing your teeth daily is essential, doing it too hard can damage your teeth and irritate your gums. When you brush hard, you can remove gum tissue that protects your teeth. Over time, your teeth will become sensitive since your gums have receded. You cannot naturally regrow gum tissue. Brushing your teeth too hard can also rub off more than just surface stains and damage the actual tooth itself. Always use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace it when it starts to wear. Try to gently massage your teeth when you brush.

2. Grinding and clenching

Grinding and clenching your teeth can cause muscle tension and joint pain. Continual grinding and clenching of the teeth can even cause chipping or cracking. If you feel like you have a tight jaw or hear popping noises when you open wide, then you might be clenching. To avoid this damage, figure out ways to reduce overall tension and stress. One dental care option is to wear a mouthguard during sleep.

3. Eating too much sugar

Constant snacking can be tempting, especially if you are hungry. Eating too much sugar can allow bacteria to flourish in your mouth. Sugar and bacteria can damage your teeth, so eating your favorite snacks can put you at a higher risk of developing a cavity. Try to eat healthier foods and eliminate any sugary drinks like soda and juice. Brush your teeth after meals to keep bacteria and sugar away.

4. Using teeth as tools

Using your teeth to open a bag of chips or plastic packaging can be tempting. However, this behavior raises your chances of cracking or even losing a tooth. Stop doing this immediately if you want to protect your teeth. It only takes a moment to find scissors.

5. Stop smoking

Cigarettes and chewing tobacco can increase your chances of developing gum disease and other harmful infections. Tobacco products can damage your teeth enamel and lead to tooth decay. Smoking can also cause your teeth to turn yellow. Tobacco not only raises your risk of losing teeth, but it also increases the chances of losing your life.

6. Chewing on hard items

Lastly, avoid chewing on hard things such as ice and candy. Tough textures can break and damage your teeth. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria. Even something as small as biting your nails can cause jaw problems.
